Israel - Day 8

This morning we got up early and walked up to Sam Booki--a coffee/pastry shop--and ate some of Mike's favorite pastries. He calls them triangles, as we do not know the actual name, and they are basically a pastry filled with chocolate goodness. We then packed up our stuff, got on our bus, and headed out. Our first stop was at Gath--the hometown of Goliath. This was the most important Philistine city and one at which a lot of Israelite history took place. After this we went to Tel Azekah which overlooks the Elah Valley. As we were sitting here, we read the story of David killing Goliath (since this took place in the Elah Valley). It was very cool to read the account and watch where it actually took place! After a quick stop at the brook where David picked up the stones (I do mean stones, not pebbles--they would have been about the size of a baseball), we went to Lachish. Lachish is probably the second most important site in Israel (after Jerusalem). We were able to see the remains of a siege ramp used by Sennacherib and the Assyrians from the 7th or 8th century BC. After this we went to Ashkelon (another important Philistine city) to take a dip in the Mediterranean. After that we drove to Beersheba where we are staying tonight.

At the Mediterranean Sea the guys on the trip started wrestling each other in the water. When they found out it was difficult to knock Michael over, they tried attacking him from all sides with three different guys. One of them is his new friend that is from Germany. They make a lot of jokes with one another about how Michael is his mayor (since Burger comes from "Burgermeister" meaning "mayor" in German).
